The good news is that many cancers can be prevented and successfully treated if found early.

Prevention and early intervention are the best ways to control cancer. Everyday we have the potential to make a difference - almost every thing we do affects our health. 50,000 cancers could be avoided each year in Australia by making small changes to our lives.

Everyone needs good information to make sound decisions. You can pick up free, up to date publications about cancer from the Cancer Council offices across the Territory or call The Cancer Council Cancer Helpline on 13 11 20.

Tips for Making a Difference

Quit Smoking
Smoking can contribute to one in three cancers, including some cancers of the mouth, throat, stomach, lung, bowel, bladder and cervix. Cigarettes are also the biggest cause of heart disease. Giving up smoking could be the best health decision you make.

Eat Well
Cutting down on fatty foods and eating more fresh fruit, vegies and wholegrain cereals can help protect you against a variety of cancers and other health problems.

Keep Fit
A brisk walk is something you can do every day, but any exercise you do will have long term benefits. Being more active can cut your chance of developing many health problems like bowel cancer and heart disease.

If you do Drink
Whilst a couple of drinks a day has been said to protect you against heart disease - it can increase your chance of cancer, especially if you smoke also. Be sensible about what and how much you drink.

Be Sunsmart
The Territory has one of the highest incidences of skin cancers in Australia - you can help to prevent skin cancer by making sure you and your kids play safe in the sun. Slip on tightly woven, loose fitting clothing, slop on SPF 30+ sunscreen and slap on a hat and sunglasses whenever you're outdoors.

Checkups and Early Detection
Screening for breast, bowel and cervical cancer saves lives, finding cancer early offers one of the best chances to treat the disease. Make sure regular check ups are part of your health routine.

The office of The Cancer Council offers information and education to the community on all aspects of prevention.
