Sometimes coping with your feelings will seem like the most difficult part of having cancer. It is natural to feel upset and even fearful. It's easier to come to grips with the reality of any crisis if we replace lack of knowledge with information.

Marg Hodgetts, Support ServicesThe CCNT offers a number of support groups for people living with cancer. At present, the following groups meet on a regular basis:

    Member of the Australian Council of Stoma Associations.

    This service caters to all ostomates whether cancer related or not. Appliances are free of charge through the Stoma Appliance scheme and are distributed to clients throughout the Territory.

    Supplies are ordered weekly. In Darwin supplies can be picked up from the Cancer Council office. Alice Springs ostmates are able to pick up and order their supplies from Adolescent and Adult Health, Flynn Drive, Alice Springs.

    Ostomy Support group meetings are held in Darwin and Alice Springs. Occasionally guest speakers from medical supply companies and Health Care Professionals will attend to give product launches and presentations.     Stomal Mangagement Advice Clinics are available to ostmates in Darwin and Alice Springs. The clinics offer assistance and advice for any problems regarding stomas. Please contact Adolescent and Adult Health Clinic in Alice Springs on or the Casuarina Community Health Centre in Darwin on 8922 7301 for details.

    Breast Care Nurses back to top

    Were you diagnosed with breast cancer - Today? Yesterday? Tomorrow?

    It's difficult making decisions when you still have questions. Women who are able to access a Breast Care Nurse when they are diagnosed have fewer psyhcosocial problems and receive greater continuity of care. The Breast Care Nurse can provide information, resources and support.

    This service is free of charge and works in partnership with The Cancer Council's NT's Breast Cancer Support Service.

    Breast Cancer Peer Support back to top

    Breast Cancer peer support is made up of volunteers, who themselves have experienced breast cancer and have undertaken special training to support women recently diagnosed with the disease. Information kits, practical tips and support are part of the free service offered.
